Well, my game wasn't any prettier today in Round 2 of the Egolf Tour's Bolle Classic at Sapona Country Club. I played the event's co-host, the Country Club of Salisbury today, and despite a strong affection for the course, my game floundered. Once again, I did a remarkable job of limiting the damage and suffered just one bogey, and today I did a better job on the par 5's, and managed to post a three-under-par round of 68 to make the cut, which fell at 4 under par, right on the number.
Overall, my game was disappointing again today. I drove the ball the worst that I have in a long time and again struggled with my irons and wedges. My thought process was a little bit off today, too. For the first time in a while, I found myself thinking about the cut-line and letting that influence my nerves. To my credit, however, I did stay committed to my game plan and did a good job of gathering my focus for every shot. In fact, while my ball-striking worsened towards the end of the day today, I came up with a couple of clutch chip shots and holed 10-foot par putts on each of my last two holes to sneak into the weekend.
There are a lot of positives that I will take from the last two days. I am learning to manage my game better when my ball-striking isn't there, and the fact that I have only made two bogeys for the first thirty six holes of this tournament is a testament to that. Also, I have been very happy with my putting from short-range and am proud of my commitment on my last two putts of the day in round 2. I also hit two really good chip shots in tough situations on the second nine of my second round. My chipping is an area of my game to which I have dedicated a lot of practice time lately, so it felt great to hit a couple good ones when I needed them. So, my performance has certainly not been good for the first two rounds of the tournament, but I still have plenty of things about which to feel good.
The best news of all is that I have two more rounds at Sapona Country Club to move up in the field. I am confident that that "lovin' feeling" is going to come back to me soon. I tee it up at 9:30 tomorrow morning, and you can bet that I will be smiling! Come back for a report from round 3, and expect to hear good news!
